Signing modes

Signing mode determines how a signer accesses and completes a signing request. Undersign supports two signing modes: Email Signing and In-Person Signing.

The documents, fields, signing process, and completed records work the same way in both modes. The main difference is how the signing request is presented to the signer.

Email signing vs. in-person signing

ModeHow it worksBest for
Email Signing Undersign sends the signer a secure link by email. The signer opens the link on their own device and completes the request remotely. Remote signers, customers, vendors, employees, and other situations where the signer is not physically with you.
In-Person Signing The sender opens the signing request on their device and hands the device to the signer. The signer completes the request while physically present with the sender. Counter service, appointments, walk-ins, meetings, or any situation where the signer is with you.

Email signing

With Email Signing, the signer receives a secure signing link at the email address specified in the signing request.

The signer can open the link on their own device, review the documents, complete their assigned fields, and submit the request.

No Undersign account is required for the signer.

See Email Signing.

In-person signing

With In-Person Signing, the signer does not receive an email invitation. Instead, the sender opens the signing request on their own device and gives the device to the signer to complete.

The signer reviews the documents and completes their assigned fields while physically present with the sender. Once finished, the device is returned to the sender.

This is useful when you are completing paperwork with someone face-to-face and want them to sign immediately.

See In-Person Signing.

Choosing a signing mode

Choose Email Signing when the signer will complete the request remotely.

Choose In-Person Signing when the signer is physically with you and will complete the request on your device.

Note: Signing mode is separate from signing order. You can configure how signers access the request (email or in person) and separately control whether multiple signers complete it sequentially or in parallel.
