Template FAQs
Common questions about creating, preparing, and managing document templates in Undersign.
What is a template?
A template is a reusable PDF document that you prepare with the fields required for signing. Once prepared, you can use the same template to create signing requests without having to add and position the fields each time.
Templates are useful for documents you send repeatedly, such as agreements, forms, applications, or contracts.
See Create a Template.
What is the difference between a Raw and Fillable template?
When you upload a PDF, it starts as a Raw template. It contains the document but does not have signing fields configured.
After you add and configure the required fields, the template becomes Fillable and can be used to create signing requests.
Can I reuse the same template for different signers?
Yes. A template can be reused for different signing requests and different sets of signers.
The fields remain configured on the template, while the appropriate signer information can be provided when creating the signing request.
See Add Signers.
Can I edit a template after creating it?
Yes. You can edit the template's properties and fields from the template list.
Changes made to a template apply when the template is used for new signing requests. They do not change a signing request that has already been sent.
What are prefilled fields?
Prefilled fields are template fields whose values can be entered before the signing request is sent.
For example, you can use the same template for events in different locations and prefill the Venue and Date fields with the appropriate information each time you send it.
Prefilled fields are also useful for information such as customer names, prices, dates, or other values that are known before sending.
Why can't I use my template for signing?
Check whether the template is still Raw. Raw templates cannot be used to create signing requests.
Open Edit Fields and make sure the required signing fields have been added and assigned to the appropriate recipients. Once the template is properly configured, it will be shown as Fillable.
See Configure Fields.
What happens if I delete a template?
A deleted template is moved to Template Trash, where it may remain available according to your account's configured deletion behavior. Check Template Trash if you need to locate a template that was deleted.
