Common API Errors
Common failure categories and how to respond to each.
Failure categories
Authentication failure
The request isn't authenticated correctly. Check the Authorization header and the credential's state. See Authentication Problems.
Invalid request
The request body is malformed or missing required fields. Validate the JSON, the documented field names, and the schema requirements. See Validation.
Template not found
The referenced template_id isn't available. Verify it appears in List Templates for your account. See Template Problems.
Signature request not created
Creation failed. Check that templates is present, each template_id is valid, and each signer has a name and email. Match the error.code against the error code reference. See Signature Request Problems.
Status lookup failure
The status endpoint couldn't return the request. Confirm the request identifier is correct and the request belongs to your account.
Webhook not received
No notification arrived. Check the endpoint URL, public reachability, HTTPS, the event list and your incoming request logs. See Webhook Problems.
Duplicate / retried request
A retried create may have produced a duplicate. Use idempotency keys so the same logical retry doesn't create duplicates, and retrieve status before creating again. See Idempotency.
General guidance
- Log the
request_idfrom every response and include it when contacting support. - Handle authentication, validation, resource and temporary failures appropriately. See Error Handling.
- Retry temporary failures with increasing delays and never infinite-loop retries. See Rate Limits.
